Windows: Peer Block Installation

Last modified: January 16 2012.

Peer Block is a program similar to a firewall that is capable of blocking incoming and outgoing connections based on IP block lists. When configured correctly and with the right lists, Peer Block offers an effective method of helping you maintain your privacy while downloading online.

Peer Block should be installed and used whenever you are downloading from Peer to Peer networks.

Download Peer Block for Windows and start the program installation.

Install Screen 1

During the Peer Block installation you will be asked what lists you wish to have blocked (See image below). The minimum you should select to have blocked is the P2P list. You may wish to select more block lists which may or may not have an impact on your downloading capability.

Note: If you do not select the Allow HTTP check box you will experience many problems trying to browse regular websites. Peer Block blocks companies that should have no involement in P2P downloading from connecting to your computer. If you wish to browse the web unrestricted (but keep Peer Block protecting your downloads), check the Allow HTTP box.

Updates to both Peer Block and the Block Lists should be checked some time between 2 and 5 days. Blocklists are updated roughly once a week. Peer Block receives updates much less frequently. Updates to Peer Block will be broadcast on our news page.

That concludes the Peer Block installation program.

Install Screen 4

Once the installation has completed, Peer Block will download the most current Block Lists from the web. These lists are typically a few megabytes.

Install Screen 5

Open Peer Block from the system tray by double clicking.

Windows System Tray

Configure the program options under the settings tab like depicted in the screen capture. Notifying on allowed connections is unnecessary and often a hinderance when an internet address must be added to a whitelist.

Post Install Configuration

Continue to the next page of settings by clicking the 'Next ->' button. Make sure your Peer Block launches with Windows or that you start it manually before you start downloading. Lists and Peer Block should be auto-updated every few days.

Post Install Configuration

Peer Block can also be temprarily disabled via the system tray menu. Right-click for options.
